Shake Off Winter

Shake Off Winter

It’s Time For Spring!

Spring in the Pacific Northwest is a beautiful mix of rain and sun, mud and blossoms. The best part of it? It’s here! That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce our brand-new Earthy, Sweet & Spicy Spring Seasoning Blend. This seasoning is a celebration of the season’s awakening, blending the last of winter’s stored roots with a look at the sunnier days ahead. We hope it helps to invigorate your cooking and bring a touch of springtime sunshine to your table.

This year, our Spring Seasoning Blend features an unusual and exciting trio:

  • Yacon: Sustainably grown by our friends at Garden Treasures Farm in Arlington, WA, This intriguing tuber offers a sweet, almost pear-like flavor with a hint of earthiness. Often compared to a jicama/pear cross, yacon can be eaten fresh or cooked (and we admit it was a little hard to save it all for the dehydrator… there may have been some snacking going on). Although they’ve chosen not to pursue official organic certification at this time, their yacon are organically grown and their farm follows bioregenerative practices.

    • A Glimpse Into the Past: Yacon ( Smallanthus sonchifolius) boasts a rich history, particularly in the Andean region of South America. Cultivated and consumed for centuries, the ancient inhabitants of the Andes valued yacon not only for its sweet taste but also for its medicinal properties. Traditionally, the crisp, juicy tubers were eaten fresh, often as a snack during long journeys. This resilient root has nourished communities for generations, and we're delighted to bring its unique flavor to your spring cooking.

  • Nantes Carrots (certified organic): Joining the yacon are vibrant Nantes carrots from Boldly Grown Farm in Bow, Washington. Known for their tender texture and sweet, almost candy-like flavor, these carrots are a true taste of springtime freshness.

    • A Personal History: If you’ve read our Founder’s Story, you’ve seen that her father’s influence on her love of fresh veggies was huge. One of her earliest gardening memories is carefully planting rows of carrots. This was her favorite outdoor task, poking small holes into the fresh earth with the eraser end of a pencil, then dropping a seed carefully into each one. Nantes carrots were a particular favorite of her father’s, easily identified by their rounded ends and favored for their intense, sweet taste.

  • Jalapeños (certified organic): As fans of our Crunchy Jalapeños know sadly too well, we weren’t able to source enough of these tasty peppers locally last season to last. But the sweet yacon and carrots were just begging for the bright spice of jalapenos for balance. The closest climes that support these peppers so early in the year are California and Mexico, so we reached out to our neighbors Mountain Rose Herbs in Eugene, Oregon to find the best and brightest jalapeño flavors. We like to think of this as a little spring break trip to bring back the bounty of the sun. Don’t worry, we have plans to up our jalapeno game this summer so there will be plenty of Puget Sound peppers to go around!

Tips and Tricks:

Our Spring Seasoning Blend is as versatile as all our seasonings, and as you’ve come to expect, completely salt, sugar, and additive free.

  • Bump up some biscuits: Making a savory biscuit batter? Toss in some of this for a savory punch.

  • Flavor lighter proteins: Sprinkle it on chicken, fish, or tofu before grilling or baking. For frying or air frying, blend some into your breading or batter.

  • Pop it: This might just be our favorite popcorn seasoning ever. Use oil or butter to help it stick, then add salt to taste… or not!

  • Great grains: Season quinoa, farro, or rice with the blend for an extra layer of flavor. You can add it to the cooking water or sprinkle it on afterward.

  • As always, it’s a great soup or sauce starter!

Just like our other seasonings, the Spring Seasoning Blend is crafted with care, using only ingredients sourced from local and regional trusted partners. We believe in the power of seasonal eating and the incredible flavors that each time of year has to offer.
